About Resounding Joy: We are the only nonprofit in San Diego dedicated solely to transforming lives through the healing power of music. We utilize clinical and evidence-based interventions that support each client’s social, cognitive, emotional, motor, physiologic, physical, and mental health goals. Our board-certified therapists serve people of all ages from premature infants to those receiving end-of-life care in settings that are emotionally and financially accessible. As a nonprofit, much of our work is providing for free or on a sliding scale, to ensure that all people have access to music therapy, regardless of financial situation.
Position Overview
Status: Full Time, Hourly Non-Exempt
Location: San Diego (and surrounding areas), California
Start Date: August 1, 2025

Compensation:
- $1,000 Sign-on Bonus ($500 at 3-months and $500 at 6-months)
- $30 - $38/hour, based on experience
Music Therapist Responsibilities:
- Deliver a mixed caseload of in-clinic (Sorrento Valley), in-home, and facility-based services.
- Provide direct music therapy to clients and families—virtually and in-person, individually and in groups.
- Complete assessments, treatment plans, documentation, evaluations, and termination summaries in a timely and professional manner
- Collaborate with clients’ multidisciplinary teams as needed (e.g., PTs, OTs, SLPs, Activity Directors, Teachers, MDs, RNs)
- Exercise sound judgment, uphold client confidentiality, and maintain ethical standards in all interactions
- Attend staff meetings, individual supervision, and participate in events or community engagement activities as requested
- Contribute to program development, including creation or refinement of service models, curricula, or new offerings
- Provide oversight or mentorship to contracted musicians or volunteers supporting sessions
- Participate in the supervision and support of music therapy interns, depending on experience and interest
- Take on growth-oriented opportunities such as leading projects, piloting new programs, or serving on internal committees
- Other duties as assigned, consistent with the evolving needs of the organization.
Resounding Joy Populations Served:
- Sounds of Legacy Program: Well-Seniors and older adults with neurodegenerative diagnoses and other conditions of aging. Locations: older adult facilities, in-home, and at our Wellness Center.
- Sounds of Service Program: Active-Duty Military Personnel, Veterans, First Responders, and their Families. Locations: veteran facilities, in-home, and at our Wellness Center.
- Sounds of Healing Program: Children with a Medical or Mental Health Diagnosis and/or developmental disabilities, and their Families. Locations: schools, in-home, social service organizations, our Wellness Center
- Sounds of Community Program: Community-based wellness and outreach services delivered in partnership with local organizations and events.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy or approved equivalency required.
- Active Music Therapy Board Certification (MT-BC) required.
Core Competencies:
- Musical abilities as outlined by the AMTA Standards of Practice.
- Ability to adapt vocally in both speech and singing for individual and group settings, up to six hours per day.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Adaptable and flexible.
- Able to receive and implement feedback.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Capacity to work with people with a diverse range of intellectual and physical abilities.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Requirements:
- Reliable transportation to and from appointments.
- Required physical abilities include typing, speaking, sitting, walking, and other necessary movements, including the ability to stand for at least one hour at a time.
- Ability to pass background check, fingerprinting, and drug testing.
- Current on all vaccinations or approved medical or religious exemption. Must be willing to comply with partner testing requirements.
- Ability to safely lift at least 20 lbs. for transporting instruments.
