Job Summary

Provides comprehensive school social work services to parents, students and school staff, addressing barriers that limit a student from receiving full benefit from their educational experience. Responds to referrals from school administration, parents, teachers, the district office, and others by providing direct services and by assisting families in accessing appropriate community resources.

Essential Functions

1. Conducts parent interviews to acquire socio-developmental information as needed for special education referrals.
2. Assists the school in following school board regulations for excessive absences and truancy. Attends student support team meetings.
3. Participates in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices for the provision of comprehensive school social work service
4. Conducts home visits as a method to access the family and conducts interviews in response to school referrals
5. Maintains an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs. Refers parents and students to agencies when appropriate.
6. Provides counseling and support groups.
7. Provides crisis intervention services.
8. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

Certifications & Licenses: Florida Department of Education's Specialization Requirements for Certification in School Social Worker (Grades PK-12) - Specialty Class. Professional License preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
•Knowledge of social work practices, procedures, ethical issues, professional issues , and standards
•Knowledge of casework practices and procedures
•Knowledge of Florida Statutes governing compulsory school attendance, education of homeless students, and mandatory procedures regarding cases of child abuse and neglect
•Knowledge of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
•Strong skills in direct and indirect intervention to include counseling on an individual, group, or family basis
•Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
•Strong case management skills
•Strong time management skills
•Strong organizational skills
•Strong word processing and database software skills
•Ability to network with school programs and community agencies to provide essential services for families and children
•Ability to consult with administrators, teachers, parents, and other professionals
•Ability to manage multiple tasks
