Position: Peer Support Specialist
Status: W-2 employee – non-exempt
Time Commitment: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Overview: USA is a local non-profit with a mission to end youth homelessness.
Responsibilities of the role:
- Relate to the needs and concerns of clients through shared lived experience;
- Model personal responsibility, self-advocacy and hopefulness;
- Collaborate with team members and assist with client transportation as needed;
- Accompany clients to appointments as needed to provide additional emotional support;
- Collaborate with Case Manager to manage and check rooms;
- Support clients with daily living activities, such as personal hygiene, laundry, house cleaning, grocery shopping, and budgeting money;
- Meet with all enrolled clients 1:1 weekly;
- Meet with all graduated clients in 60-day follow up period weekly;
- Document all active and graduated client interactions in a timely matter;
- Utilize effective positive engagement and conflict resolution skills;
- Regularly attend team meetings and provide updates on client progress;
- Driving clients to and from appointments and other needs;
- Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job requirements:
- Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
- Minimum of one (1) years’ experience working in a social service setting, serving individuals with severe mental illness or otherwise show demonstrated ability to relate to the needs and concerns of TAY with SMI;
- Lived experience a plus;
- Bilingual a plus;
- Must submit to a background check via Live Scan (with ongoing alerts), as required by specific programs, funding requirements and licensing regulations;
- Must have valid drivers license with no moving violations to be able to drive company vehicles.
General Requirements, including linguistic and cultural skills, education, experience, licenses and certifications:
Maintain and execute confidential information according to HIPAA standards. Experience as a youth or TAY who has experienced homelessness a strong plus. A strong positive viewpoint towards mental health is essential. Maintain a warm, welcoming, and positive environment that promotes youth well-being who may have histories of homelessness and mental health challenges, including possible substance use disorders and adverse childhood experiences, who may be culturally diverse and gender fluid.
Additional requirements:
Excellent organizational skills and monitoring details focus; demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations; ability and desire to work as a part of a team; ability to keep confidential information confidential and be discreet; and willingness to support USA’s mission and values. Position requires ability to use technology such as tablets and databases to document input; ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; and advanced proficiency working with computers. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
