General Summary
In accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the School Social Worker is responsible for providing a problem-solving service to students, their families and school staff through individual, group, classroom, and community social work interventions.
About the Role
- Provides individual, group, and classroom support to students.
- Supports building and district-wide behavior initiatives.
- Assists students in learning social skills and developing appropriate peer relations.
- Collaborates with school staff.
- Participates as a member of the district-wide Crisis Intervention Team and the ELPS Mental Health Advisory Committee.
- Supports the implementation of a social-emotional identification, screening and referral process for middle school students.
- Provides social work evaluations and services to students suspected to have a disability or to special education students through the referral or Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET).
- Provides pre-referral consultation to teachers and administrators regarding students with behavioral and/or adjustment problems as needed.
- Attends MET and Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings.
Education, Knowledge and Skills Required
- Master's degree from a graduate school of social work program approved by the State Board of Education
- Certificate with School Social Worker endorsement/license
- Must have attained a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree with State of Michigan licensure
- Demonstrated capabilities in report writing, evaluation, and interview procedures
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary group
- Ability to meet deadlines for reports, forms, and required paperwork
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth
- Ability and desire to work with a diverse student body with a commitment to providing a positive experience for students and their families regardless of race, culture, creed, religion, handicapping condition, social-economic status, gender or gender identity
