Supervisor: Principal / Assistant Principal/Director of Student Services & Special Education
Salary: Per Teacher's Collective Bargaining Agreement, Contract Extension and Benefits / Benefit Premiums
Work Year: School Year

Summary: Under the general supervision of the Principal and Director of Special Education, to provide students, parents, administrators, and other teaching staff with individually-tailored advice and consultation to overcome personal, emotional, familial, or social issues to maximize the students' learning experience.

Qualifications / Experience

  • ISBE PEL with School Social Worker or School Counselor endorsement, required.
  • An interest and/or experience in working with regular and special education students to develop social and organizational skills
  • An interest in providing consultation and assistance to parents
  • Expertise in conducting social developmental studies and developing Individual Education Programs for students with social skill deficits
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others to optimize student achievement
  • A willingness to participate in staff development opportunities
  • A strong commitment to professional excellence

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of formal and informal assessment procedures
  • Selects appropriate assessment instruments
  • Conducts assessments appropriately
  • Interprets assessment information accurately
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the screening/referral/evaluation process
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of instructional goals and objectives
  • Demonstrates awareness, understanding and knowledge of the variety of physical, emotional and cognitive conditions which may contribute to a student's learning problems
  • Reports assessment data in a clear and concise manner
  • Provides classroom observations
  • Designs Individualized Educational Programs
  • Develops individualized goals and objectives based on assessment results
  • Provides long-range student planning
  • Fully participates in the MDC/IEP process
  • Conducts functional analysis
  • Assists in the development and modification of Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Demonstrates collaborative problem solving
  • Communicates in an effective, constructive, and positive manner with staff, students, and parents.
  • Interacts positively and effectively with school personnel, including administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, building staff, etc., as an effective team member
  • Promotes positive public relations
  • Demonstrates understanding and skills related to the practice of counseling and behavior management
  • Develops intervention plans consistent with assessments, classroom environment, and student needs
  • Provides instruction in Student Assistance Program and is liaison for student assistance programs
  • Referrals to parents for access to community services
  • Regularly reviews and updates IEP goals and objectives
  • Implements appropriate counseling/behavioral strategies to meet individual/group student needs
  • Effectively organizes time to maximize service delivery to schools served
  • Demonstrates due care in service delivery according to standards of social work
  • Participates with the building Student Services Team
  • Monitors implementation of student I.E.P.'s
  • Responsible for gathering, monitoring, and completion of all pupil data surrounding staffings, case studies, and annual reviews
  • Manages and coordinates required meetings/conferences
  • Manages and coordinates required paperwork
  • Follows policies and procedures of the district

  • Demonstrates knowledge of special education legislation and acts in accordance with these mandates
