The College & Career Counselor will be held accountable for establishing relationships with both scholars and parents. In addition, the counselor will provide opportunities for scholars to develop skills in the areas of social/personal growth, educational planning and skills for academic success. The College & Career Counselor will work with teachers and leaders to identify our scholars and families who are most in need of additional services, and s/he will then lead a collaborative effort to plan for and provide the necessary support. In this effort, the college & career counselor will directly provide individual and group counseling to scholars and their families, while also working to link families with long-term counseling solutions and external support organizations. In addition, the High School College & Career Counselor will oversee all aspects of the college admissions process and post-secondary planning for all scholars. The college & career counselor will be responsible for coordinating and scheduling college level courses.
Experience with College Admissions, Common Application, College Board Testing, and Dual Enrollment preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold or be eligible for State of Delaware Educator License
  • Prefer candidate to hold or be eligible for State of Delaware Certification-Secondary School Counselor
  • 3 years' experience or internship
  • Prefer Master's degree from an accredited college/university in School Counseling
  • Favorable Criminal Background Check for the candidate who is offered employment.
  • Tuberculin test & physical.
  • Mandatory Direct Deposit of paycheck. REPORTS TO: Administration
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to school guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the school and community.
  • Work effectively with community organizations.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Support the value of education.
  • Support student's post-secondary planning and keep detailed records.
  • Act as the school's College Board Testing Coordinator, overseeing AP, SAT, and PSAT Testing.
  • Act as a liaison for Dual Enrollment with Delaware State University.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.
  • Requires some travel.
  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively personal, social, academic and family concerns
  • Consult with parents, teacher, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
  • Implement a comprehensive appraisal process by: selecting and administering appropriate ability, achievement, and interests' tests, visiting with students interpreting results to students, teacher, administrators, and parents.
  • Update and maintain confidential student records, including cumulative transcripts and student files.
  • Implement an effective program of education and mental/emotional wellness.
  • Assist with enrollment and school choice process as needed.
  • Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  • Participate in IEP and 504 meetings as needed.
  • Assist with the activities of student organizations.
  • Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, and open house.
  • See that school policies are observed during all activities.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Obtain advance approval of school administration for all activities and expenditures.
  • Work in conjunction with the other members of the High School Administrative team in regards to school climate and culture.
  • Develop and implement a school counselor annual plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Administrative Staff.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Eleven Months
  • Starts August
  • Salary Range: Teacher Scale
  • Benefits in accordance with Board of Education policy.
  • Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board of Directors and State policies
