Job Summary
The Peer Counselor plays a vital role in supporting individuals facing challenges related to mental health, addiction, and behavioral health issues. This position involves providing guidance, encouragement, and resources to clients while fostering a supportive environment. The Peer Counselor utilizes personal experience and training to assist clients in navigating their recovery journey and achieving their goals.
Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one support and counseling to clients dealing with mental health and addiction issues.
- Facilitate group sessions and workshops focused on coping strategies, recovery skills, and personal development.
- Utilize crisis management techniques to assist clients in high-stress situations, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Implement crisis intervention strategies as needed to de-escalate situations and provide immediate support.
- Assist clients in accessing community resources, including behavioral health services, housing assistance, and employment programs.
- Mentor clients by sharing personal experiences and offering guidance on recovery pathways.
- Employ motivational interviewing techniques to encourage positive behavior change and enhance client engagement.
- Collaborate with social workers, mental health professionals, and other stakeholders to create comprehensive care plans for clients.
- Maintain accurate documentation of client interactions, progress notes, and treatment plans in accordance with organizational policies.
Skills
- Strong understanding of crisis management principles and effective crisis intervention strategies.
- Knowledge of behavioral health systems and resources available for individuals in need of support.
- Experience in mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering trust and rapport.
- Proficiency in motivational interviewing techniques to facilitate client engagement and empowerment.
- Background in social work or mental health counseling is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with addiction counseling practices is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey empathy and understanding.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team while maintaining a client-centered approach.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $23.00 - $27.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
