About the role:

Reporting to the Senior Director, the Training Director at the University of San Francisco’s IACS-accredited Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) oversees all aspects of its robust training programs—including an APA-accredited doctoral internship in health service psychology (reaffirmed in 2022 for the maximum 10-year term), an APPIC-member post-doctoral fellowship, and an advanced practicum program. This role provides vision, leadership, and administrative coordination for training efforts, supporting both trainees and staff supervisors. Responsibilities include developing procedures, evaluating training effectiveness, managing recruitment, and delivering psychological services to a diverse student body.

The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is: $127,000 - $130,000 based on experience.

What you will be doing:

Program Administration

• Developing and administering training programs in accordance with American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation standards and Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) guidelines.
• Overseeing participation in and ensuring compliance with the APPIC selection and match process for internship programs.
• Administering training programs in collaboration with CAPS leadership, while balancing clinical service demands, policy changes, stakeholder needs, legislative shifts, and accrediting body expectations.
• Maintaining APA accreditation for the Doctoral Internship Program by writing self-studies, facilitating site visits, completing annual reports, submitting evaluation data, and notifying the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of substantive changes; maintaining APPIC membership through annual updates and required documentation.
• Developing and updating training-related materials annually (e.g., website content, brochures, manuals, syllabi) to align with accreditation and national standards.
• Overseeing the development of new training programs when center capacity and institutional needs allow.

Recruitment

• Developing, managing, and coordinating trainee recruitment processes, including evaluating applications, conducting interviews, and ranking candidates for the APA-accredited doctoral internship, postdoctoral fellowship, and advanced practicum programs.
• Reviewing candidate applications annually across all training levels.

Curriculum

• Ensuring training curricula meet accreditation and professional standards and adjusting content as needed.
• Developing, coordinating, and facilitating training program orientation schedules and offering administrative support and consultation to training staff.
• Coordinating and delivering weekly Didactic Inservice, Summer Supervision, Program Evaluation, and Professional Development Seminars, including creating and presenting seminar content.

Supervision

• Coordinating supervisory assignments and providing administrative supervision to clinical supervisors; facilitating bimonthly supervisor meetings and encouraging ongoing development in supervisory competency.
• Providing weekly group supervision for doctoral interns and individual supervision for postdoctoral fellows; offering additional clinical and crisis supervision as needed.
• Reviewing and providing feedback on clinical documentation (e.g., intakes, progress notes, crisis management, termination summaries, video recordings) and writing mid- and end-of-year evaluations for supervisees.

Monitoring Progress & Evaluation

• Monitoring trainee progress and providing support and intervention as needed to foster professional growth.
• Collecting and maintaining mid- and end-of-year trainee evaluations and records in compliance with accreditation standards.
• Utilizing competency-based evaluation methods to assess trainee development, writing remediation/training plans, and implementing due process procedures when necessary.
• Conducting semesterly individual meetings with trainees to review goals, progress, and training outcomes.
• Communicating trainee progress and concerns with home institutions when appropriate.
• Soliciting feedback from trainees and senior staff to evaluate supervision and the overall training program.
• Assessing training program efficacy and implementing changes to meet accreditation and service needs.

Professional Development

• Maintaining active membership in professional organizations such as APA, APPIC, ACCTA, and the Northern California Counseling Center Training Directors group; attending annual or biennial conferences when funding permits.

Other Administrative Duties

• Assuming delegated responsibilities from the Senior Director related to internal CAPS operations and performing additional duties as assigned.

Clinical Services and Responsibilities

• Maintaining an active California psychologist license and fulfilling continuing education requirements, including supervision training.
• Providing culturally responsive clinical services (individual, couples, and group therapy) within a brief therapy model to support a diverse student population.
• Conducting triage and intake assessments, determining treatment needs, and facilitating referrals for students whose needs exceed CAPS’s scope.
• Providing crisis intervention, including suicide/homicide risk assessment, emergency referrals, and hospitalization facilitation.
• Completing timely and thorough documentation in accordance with APA ethics and California legal standards.
• Participating in administrative operations (coverage, training, policy development) as a team member.
• Offering information and referrals for students ineligible for CAPS services.
• Participating in the CAPS on-call rotation to provide 24/7 crisis consultation (approx. 2–3 weeks per semester).
• Providing follow-up care for students utilizing after-hours services.
• Consulting with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and families regarding student behavior and mental health.
• Delivering outreach services and guest lectures on mental health topics as requested.
• Collaborating with campus partners to provide crisis debriefing after community trauma events.
• Participating in weekly case conferences and staff meetings.
• Engaging in professional development and serving on hiring committees as needed.
• Representing CAPS at campus-wide events and committee meetings.
  

Minimum Qualifications:

• An earned doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program. Candidate must have completed an APA-
• Accredited Doctoral internship in psychology.
• Licensed or License eligible as a Psychologist in the State of California. If License eligible, must have an active license as a psychologist in another state. If unlicensed in California at the time of hire, must obtain a license within 6 months of hire. License must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
• 3+ years post-licensure experience providing clinical supervision and training at the doctoral and/or post-doctoral level.
• Strong leadership and excellent organizational, administrative, written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to prepare comprehensive data reports
• 5+ years post licensure experience providing clinical services to a diverse population of college-aged clients, preferably within a university counseling center
• Extensive knowledge of evidence-based and culturally informed clinical services and brief therapy; ability to assess, manage, and ensure high quality clinical service provision, including significant knowledge and experience with crisis management and legal and ethical decision-making.
• Proficiency in word processing, e-mail, presentation and spreadsheet software; ability to use scheduling and charting database; Zoom Health or other HIPAA compliant video platform.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in administration of a clinical training program at the doctoral level (e.g., internship, practicum, post-doctoral fellowship), preferably an APA accredited internship training program in health service psychology.
• Knowledge of health service psychology accreditation training standards and requirements.
• Demonstrated experience in a leadership role preferably in a University Counseling Center
