Position Title: Psychiatric Mental Health Counselor
Department: Behavioral Health Services
Reports To: Clinical Director or Program Manager
FLSA Status: Exempt / Non-Exempt (depending on licensing and hours)
Location: Downtown Los Angeles CA

Position Summary:

The Psychiatric Mental Health Counselor provides clinical mental health counseling and psychotherapy services to individuals, families, and groups experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges. The counselor works collaboratively with psychiatrists, case managers, and other healthcare providers to deliver integrated, person-centered care. Services are focused on promoting recovery, wellness, and improved quality of life, especially for individuals with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct psychosocial assessments, biosocial assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Provide evidence-based individual, family, and group psychotherapy.
  • Monitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, case managers, and peer support specialists.
  • Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and risk assessments as needed.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Participate in team meetings, supervision, trainings, and case conferences.
  • Provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care.
  • Support clients in navigating systems of care such as housing, social services, and legal supports.
  • Promote medication adherence and support psychiatric treatment coordination.
  • Perform outreach and engagement for hard-to-reach or disengaged populations.
  • Comply with all agency policies and federal/state regulations, including HIPAA and Medi-Cal documentation standards.

Qualifications:

Education and Licensure:

  • BA Degree, Associates Degree, Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, experience and or Lived Experience related field required.
  • Licensed or license-eligible in California (e.g., LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, AMFT, ASW, APCC). Not required but is a plus
  • BBS registration required for pre-licensed candidates.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1–2 years clinical experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
  • Experience working with underserved populations (e.g., chronically mentally ill, homeless, substance using) strongly preferred.
  • Experience with crisis intervention, co-occurring disorders, or community mental health a plus.

Skills:

  • Strong clinical assessment and therapeutic skills.
  • Familiarity with DSM-5, ASAM Criteria, and Medi-Cal documentation.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in using EHR systems and Microsoft Office.

Working Conditions:

  • May require fieldwork or home visits in the community.
  • Flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends.
  • Must be able to handle high-stress environments and emotional situations.

Preferred Qualifications (Optional):

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or other relevant language).
  • Certification in trauma-informed care, CBT, DBT, or other evidence-based practices.
  • Familiarity with CalAIM/Enhanced Care Management or managed care environments.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Contract, Per diem, PRN

Pay: $23.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 40 per week
