GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
WIC SUPPORT STAFF
  • Responsible for daily activities including: (a) making appointments for WIC; (b) completing WIC applications; (c) determining income eligibility; VOC cards, issuance of electronic food benefits. Obtain WIC participants' height, weight, and hemoglobin
  • Mails out notices to WIC participants and properly documents notification of missed pick-up, missed appointments, etc.
  • Maintains adequate participant tally to determine number of WIC Participants seen.
  • Acts as a resource person for WIC via the telephone.
  • Participates in establishing and implementing WIC policies.
  • Operates Xerox machine and WIC computer system.
  • Participates in continuing education seminars both on and off-site as applicable and feasible.
  • Responsible for daily filing in WIC office.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Breastfeeding Peer Counselor
  • Promotes and encourages breastfeeding as the ideal method of infant feeding to pregnant women through providing information, having informal conversation with them, leading small discussion groups, participating in prenatal classes and discussing breastfeeding with family members.
  • Provide consultation, clinical and emotional support to a caseload of prenatal and breastfeeding women and their families.
  • Assist women and babies in learning techniques of breastfeeding, including positioning and anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of problems. Discusses appropriateness of and assist women in obtaining breastfeeding pumps.
  • Provides scheduled and unscheduled phone contact to women with breastfeeding problems, appropriate counseling when discussing breastfeeding concerns, anticipatory guidance based on the assessment recommendations for referrals to the BPCPM, nurse, nutritionist, physician or lactation consultant when concerns and problems are identified, reports caseload to the BPCPM.
  • Assess breastfeeding mothers and infants in the clinic, using established protocol identify mothers in need of personal attention. Assess mother’s concerns/problems and refers when appropriate following protocols targeted for various stages of breastfeeding.
  • Assess breastfeeding mothers in implementing special plans for the continuing of breastfeeding in situations such as: minor illness, returning to work or school, temporary mother-baby separation.
  • Documents and maintains records for, daily logs of all client contracts, all breastfeeding activities, services provided to all clients in individual’s medical record. All documentation will follow policies and procedures set forth in the breastfeeding peer counselor guide and other local agency manuals.
  • Participates in breastfeeding continuing education training to remain current on breastfeeding information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURES
  • BLS Certificate from American Red Cross or American Heart Association
  • Valid NC Drivers License
  • Completion of State Breastfeeding Peer counselor Training


Experience

Preferred
    • Previous experience with breastfeeding

Education

Preferred
  • Technical/other training or better
  • High School or better

Licenses & Certifications

Preferred
  • VALID DRIVERS LICENSE
  • BLS
