TITLE: Guidance Counselor - Elementary School

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Kentucky Certification

REPORTS TO: Principal

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  1. Keeps the Principal fully informed of any activities and/or problems concerning the school counseling program.
  2. Promotes a positive, non-threatening school environment which actively stimulates the involvement of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the SBDM Council.
  3. Promotes public relations.
  4. Serves as an advocate for all students.
  5. Assist students with academic, vocational, and person problems.
  6. Assist the principal in informing students and parents of requirements, policies and procedures of the school.
  7. Conducts individual counseling sessions and small group sessions as needed.
  8. Conferences with teachers, parents, and students.
  9. Enhances the curriculum of the school through curriculum planning, student observation, team meeting participation, SBDM Council subcommittee participation, behavior management, conflict resolution, and conferencing with all people involved in the school community for each individual student's success.
  10. Coordinate services for children with outside agencies (examples - social services, mental health services, doctors, etc.).
  11. Serves as a resource person for specific needs of the student, teacher, parent, and administrator as well as a resource for parent education.
  12. Makes home visits if necessary.
  13. Help cultivate relationships with teachers to help one another with student problems.
  14. Serve as a referral agent to other state and local agencies and aids in referrals to in-school programs.
  15. Coordinates activities for drug education (examples, distribute and collect materials, arrange for speakers, etc.).
  16. Assist the school administration in preparing for the opening of school and completing the records for the closing of school.
  17. Sees that records for students going to middle school are taken to the school for students to continue their education next year.
  18. Sees that records for transferring students delivered to the proper school.
  19. Administers and helps coordinate various assessment tools and disseminates the results.
  20. Acts as Building Assessment Coordinator for testing. (Organize, count, keep track of materials, distribute, collect and package to take to central office).
  21. Coordinates and assesses students for GT and PTP identification.
  22. Manages GT and PTP identification.
  23. Coordinates and manages Response to Intervention in the building.
  24. After test scores are returned to school, sorts and shares results with teachers and parents.
  25. Compiles test results for special education students and complete written report on individual evaluation.
  26. Analyzes, collects, and interprets test results to provide information for needs assessment for students and their parents.
  27. Screens students for special needs areas.
  28. Serves as a regular member of the ARC and attend ARC's in various capacities, (evaluator, counselor, chairperson).
  29. Serves as ARC chairperson when designated by the Principal.
  30. Works cooperatively with classroom teachers in providing avenues and approaches to the solution of pupil problems.
  31. Provides general counseling for the purpose of building self-confidence, self-esteem, social skills, study skills and others.
  32. Oversees and maintain permanent student records.
  33. Attends professional meetings.
  34. Completes 42 hours of Leadership Training every two years for professional growth and development.
  35. Perform related duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal or the Superintendent.
  36. Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
