MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent degree.
  • Be self-identified as having experience with the process of recovery from a mental illness or substance use disorder, either as a consumer of these services or as the parent, caregiver or family member of a consumer.
  • Be willing to share their experience.
  • Have a strong dedication to recovery and at least two years of sustained recovery.
  • Agree, in writing, to adhere to the Code of Ethics.
  • Successfully complete the 80-hour training requirements for a peer support specialist through a CalMHSA-approved training entity.
  • Pass the certification examination within 90 days of hire.
  • Must maintain a valid California driver’s license, insurance and driving record which complies with agency’s insurance carrier standards.
  • Must pass all applicable health, fingerprint/LiveScan and DMV clearances.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Peer Support Specialist – SUD provides trauma-informed, recovery-oriented support to individuals with substance use challenges, drawing upon their lived experience of recovery. This role is vital in promoting hope, empowerment, and wellness by offering peer-based interventions, advocacy, mentorship, and system navigation to clients engaged in recovery services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Aids clients in becoming accustomed to program routine.
  • Assist with intakes and referrals for potential new clients, as needed
  • Assists clients with finding information and filling out forms as needed.
  • Conveys respect for cultural and lifestyle diversities of clients and staff.
  • May accompany clients to activities inside the program or in the community.
  • May serve as support when a client has an appointment off premises.
  • Provides engagement and outreach to current or potential clients, and families in the community.
  • Provides expertise from personal experience in the areas of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders recovery to interdisciplinary team.
  • Completes all charting and documentation as contractually required and in timely manner as dictated by program requirements.
  • Provides services in the field/office environment, while carrying a caseload, and participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Maintain knowledge of local resources and assist caregivers with the completion of application forms for various resources to ensure that the appropriate documentation is obtained
  • Complies with all BHS and program rules, policies and procedures including HIPAA standards and 42 CFR.
  • Serves as a mentor to clients, and families to promote empowerment and hope, and while drawing on own experiences as a consumer to build trust and commonality provides peer counseling and support.
  • Promotes a team culture characterized by openness to clients’ experiences and encouragement of self- determination throughout treatment planning process.
  • Provides education and support to clients about stigma and ways to combat it, and advocates for clients by educating about grievance or complaint procedures.
  • Provides education and support to family members, including peer and family run support groups.
  • Serves as liaison between the team and consumer-run programs and encourages clients’ use of these.
  • Outreach to community agencies and organizations to be able to offer information to caregivers.
  • Encourage patient engagement and self-management to promote wellness and recovery.
  • Educate and equip patients with tools or strategies to cope more effectively, problem solve and manage their behavioral health needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE:

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt – Full Time

Work-Week: Sunday – Saturday

  • Actual work schedule as agreed with Direct Supervisor and based on business/program needs.
  • Work on-site a minimum of two days per week.

Work schedule is subject to change based on the Center’s needs.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:

No supervisory requirements.
