Job Summary

POSITION TITLE: School Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS: State teaching certificate in area of instructional responsibility

JOB GOAL: To help students develop those skills in the areas of personal/social growth, educational planning, and career development which will contribute to their growth as mature and responsible members of society.

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or designee

EVALUATION: Current Alabama evaluation program

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Develops, implements, and evaluates an annual local school counseling and guidance plan in accordance with standards set forth by the State Plan and commensurate with the local system plan.
  2. Supervises paraprofessionals, volunteers, and clerical assistants within the assigned school.
  3. Implements the school counseling and guidance program curriculum.
  4. Provides individual and group counseling and guidance including guiding and counseling students through the development of personal, social, educational, and career plans.
  5. Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians, teachers, and staff about understanding and meeting the special needs of students and makes appropriate referrals.
  6. Participates in activities, which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
  7. Provides orientation for new students, parents/guardians, and faculty.
  8. Provides appropriate appraisal services to assist teachers, parents/guardians, and students.
  9. Assists in administration of tests and analyzes and interprets test results to provide information about educational, career, and personal/social needs.
  10. Assists with placement and follow-up services for students.
  11. Assists students in selecting programs of study to enhance career planning.
  12. Provides information and resource services for students, parents/guardians, and faculty.
  13. Assists students in building self-esteem and developing decision-making, problem solving, and positive human relation skills.
  14. Plans with teachers, principal, parents/guardians, and students steps for modifying student behavior.
  15. Utilizes community resources in addressing the needs of students.
  16. Provides data concerning students' needs to determine curricula development.
  17. Prepares and manages annual budget pertinent to the counseling and guidance program.
  18. Maintains comprehensive records and reports.
  19. Develops personal professional growth plan and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
  20. Exhibits positive human relations skills.
  21. Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.
  22. Complies with local, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws affecting area of responsibility as well as the American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics.
  23. Maintains proper certification by attending college, workshop and professional development courses.
  24. Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ethics, work cooperatively with the Board, the Superintendent, administrators, certificated and non-certificated personnel, parents, and students.
  25. Attends all faculty meetings, PTA meetings, and other meetings as required by the Superintendent.
  26. Performs co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and other school related duties (hall, lunchroom, playground, drop-off and pick-up, bus, etc.) as assigned by the Superintendent.
  27. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
