Responsibilities

  • Meets with his/her caseload of students during the year in a guidance and counseling capacity to address their academic, career, and personal/social needs
  • Helps in providing motivation and incentives to encourage students to gain the most out of their educational experiences
  • Refers students/families in need of professional assistance to private agencies and serves as the school representative in the follow-up support program for his/her caseload
  • Registers students in February for the upcoming year’s classes, as determined by the courses they have already completed.

Recommendations

  • Collects and maintains appropriate records for student files, including for new students; uses SIS (Rediker/Plus Portals) to maintain student records
  • Meets with prospective families when new or transfer students are ready to move toward course selection and registration
  • Reviews academic grades frequently and at midpoint during each grading period; meets with students who have multiple D’s and F’s; contacts parents of these at-risk students
  • Oversees Student Support Team, which reviews:

Transcripts, failure reports at the end of each grading period, and attendance/behavioral data to ensure proper supports are communicated to students and teachers

  • Oversees remediation needs

College and Career Counseling

  • Works with the Assistant Principal to implement the PACE curriculum for post-secondary planning
  • Serves as a link between the school, its parents, and colleges
  • Oversees the administration of the PreACT and PSAT fall testing as assigned; is responsible for all communications to parents and students regarding the assigned test, and conducts follow-ups concerning the interpretation of the test
  • Oversees the administration of the HSPT exam for incoming freshmen
  • Oversees and organizes an in-school testing day for the SAT in the spring for junior students
  • Keeps juniors and seniors informed of testing, PSAT, ACT, and SAT
  • Assists seniors on his/her caseload with the college application process
  • Utilizes and promotes available college scholarships; maintains records of offers
  • Coordinates college night presentations for students and parents

Other Responsibilities

  • Assists the administration in developing the school master schedule, teacher schedules, and student schedules
  • Is present and participates in the school’s Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences, faculty meetings, professional development, freshman parent night, 6th, and 8th grade visit days
  • Organizes files and course selection sheets for a one-night incoming freshman registration event in the Spring; oversees event with administration
  • Seeks enrichment for professional growth by attending workshops throughout the year
  • Serves the staff in a supportive and advisory role
  • Ensures that all practices comply with national, state, diocesan, and IHSA regulations
