A Field Trip Counselor is part of the counselor team leading a group of 12 or more campers in a safe, inclusive, positive, enriching, and fun way. A Field Trip Counselor is responsible for the emotional and physical health and safety of individual campers in the group, for healthy group dynamics, and for safe travel to and from off campus locations. The position is for the full eight-week season (June 23rd-August 15th). This is a seasonal position.
Qualifications and Skills
- Must Be at least 25 years of age.
- Have a current driver’s license and a clean driving record (over the past 5 years)
- Demonstrated experience working with older children (middle school age) and/or teenagers.
- Ability to teach and lead various recreational activities.
- Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage campers and work with other staff in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere.
- Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
- Pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI.
- Successfully complete Camp driver training.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the safety, well-being, and happiness of campers on and off campus.
- Create a positive group environment working with co-counselor(s), coworkers, and superiors.
- Safely drive a 14 passenger mini-bus.
- Actively participate in all aspects of the campers’ day and assist specialists and trip site staff.
- Develop a relationship with each camper in a group and learn their strengths, interests, and needs.
- Encourage respect for self, others, personal property, and camp equipment and facilities.
- Conduct and ensure regular cleaning and checks of vehicle(s), activity areas, and equipment are being properly performed according to health and safety protocols.
- Set a good example for junior counselor(s), campers, and coworkers in all areas, including health and safety, accountability, organization, punctuality, following the rules, and sportsmanship.
- Guide campers in participating successfully and appropriately in all aspects of camp and field trips.
- Communicate regularly with co-counselor(s) and staff.
- Meet/communicate regularly with direct supervisor regarding concerns, updates, challenges, and successes.
- Uphold all policies and philosophies of the Fessenden Day Camp.
- Follow and uphold all state and local health and safety regulations and guidelines and those set by the Camp on and off campus.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and Director.
Job Requirements
- Available 8:30am-4:00pm, Monday – Friday for the entire camp season and to attend all staff training sessions during camp season. There may also be at least two days during the camp season you will be required to stay late for special events.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate health and safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Some high activity which may include dancing, running, swimming, and jumping.
- Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs.
- Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing.
- Ability to reasonably participate in all activities in the camper’s day.
- Possess the visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activity.
