Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Principal, to counsel students to fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities.
Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Implements a guidance curriculum to help students develop their full educational potential, including the student's interests and career objectives;
  • Provides responsive services to intervene on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student's continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk;
  • Provides an individual planning system to guide a student as the student plans, monitors, and manages the student's own educational, career, personal, and social development; and
  • Serves as system support to support the efforts of teachers, staff, parents, and other members of the community in promoting the educational, career, personal, and social development of students
  • Participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive developmental guidance program to serve all students and to address the special needs of students:
    • (A) who are at risk of dropping out of school, becoming substance abusers, participating in gang activity, or committing suicide;
    • (B) who are in need of modified instructional strategies; or
    • (C) who are gifted and talented, with emphasis on identifying and serving gifted and talented students who are educationally disadvantaged;
  • Consults with a student's parent or guardian and make referrals as appropriate in consultation with the student's parent or guardian;
  • Consults with school staff, parents, and other community members to help them increase the effectiveness of student education and promote student success;
  • Coordinates people and resources in the school, home, and community;
  • With the assistance of school staff, interprets standardized test results and other assessment data that help a student make educational and career plans;
  • Delivers classroom guidance activities or serve as a consultant to teachers conducting lessons based on the school's guidance curriculum; and
  • Serves as an impartial, nonreporting resource for interpersonal conflicts and discord involving two or more students

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs
  • Knowledge of school counseling duties and knowledge specific to the level (elementary/secondary) of counseling provided
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
Certification/License:

  • Texas State Certification as a School Counselor.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to counseling assignment.
  • Masters Degree preferred.

Experience
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
FLSA Status: Exempt
Salary
$57,000-$70,000 based on experience
$225 monthly insurance contribution
$20,000 district paid life insurance policy
