Basic Function
To provide clinical assessment, diagnostic and treatment services to clients and families; to participate with other mental health care professionals in the development, implementation and evaluation of client treatment plans; to provide training and guidance to other mental health care providers in the psychosocial aspects of client mental health care; and to perform related duties as assigned.

Ramsey County Social Services is hiring a Mental Health Professional to provide in-person services at the Adult Detention Center. The position works Wednesday through Saturday in 10-hour shifts between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. This role delivers a wide range of mental health services to incarcerated individuals, including conducting suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, needs assessments, short-term therapeutic support, and facilitating psychoeducational and process groups. The Mental Health Professional will collaborate closely with detention and medical staff, coordinate care with community providers and court partners, complete clinical documentation and legal paperwork such as Emergency Transport Holds and commitment petitions and deliver mental health training for facility staff. Work will be conducted in a jail environment where individuals often experience significant mental and chemical health challenges. Therapeutic sessions occur in various settings within the facility, and the position may require responding to crises, including evenings and weekends, and performing computer-based documentation and tasks.
Ramsey County Social Services is hiring a Mental Health Professional to provide adult crisis stabilization services. This full-time position is scheduled Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Adult Crisis Stabilization program is an intensive, short-term, community-based initiative. Most services are delivered in clients’ homes or within the Ramsey County community, though some may take place at the Urgent Care for Adult Mental Health office, located at 402 University Avenue East. In this role, the Mental Health Professional will provide a broad range of services to individuals experiencing a crisis. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive evaluations, performing suicide risk assessments, delivering crisis intervention and short-term therapeutic support, and coordinating long-term services.
Ramsey County Social Services is hiring a Mental Health Professional to provide services through Project Assist. This short-term, community-based program—lasting up to six months—offers screening, assessment, diagnosis, brief intervention, and coordination of ongoing services for youth identified with mental health concerns. This full-time position is scheduled Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Most services are delivered in clients’ homes or schools, though some may take place at the Urgent Care for Adult Mental Health office, located at 402 University Avenue East. In this role, the Mental Health Professional will provide a wide range of services to children experiencing mental health concerns. Responsibilities include conducting comprehensive evaluations, administering suicide risk and other child-focused screenings, delivering crisis intervention and short-term therapeutic support, and coordinating long-term care and services.
Examples of Work Performed
- Promote a diverse, culturally competent, and respectful workplace.
- Conduct mental health intake and assessment of clients by conducting interviews and conferring with other mental health care professionals in order to make clinical diagnoses and develop treatment plans.
- Provide direct individual, group, couple and family psychotherapy along with other therapeutic techniques in order to provide the most appropriate and effective treatment response for clients based on diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Develop and conduct short and long term mental health group therapy for specific populations in order to assist clients in coping more successfully with mental health problems and to reduce symptomology.
- Perform court ordered clinical evaluations of families and individuals in order to assist the courts in case disposition. May testify in legal proceedings in the capacity of expert witness if so designated by the court.
- Document case activities by charting care activities, maintaining statistics and corresponding through memorandum and letter to other service providers.
- Comply with state regulations by participating on an interdisciplinary team in order to evaluate the quality of mental health staff performance.
- Provide input into the development of needed services by serving on planning teams or various community groups.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, Counseling, or other field that qualifies for designation as a Licensed Mental Health Professional under State law.
Experience: Post Masters Degree Experience as required for licensure as a Mental Health Professional under State Law.
Certifications/Licensure: Licensure by the State of Minnesota as a Mental Health Professional.
Exam/Screening Process Information
The examination for Mental Health Professional will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on the answers provided. A candidate must pass the training and experience rating to be advanced in the process.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who pass the training and experience rating and submit a properly completed application shall be placed on the eligible list for employment as Mental Health Professional. This list will be certified to the appointing authority who may use this list to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list. The department may choose to interview any candidate on the eligible list.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application. Veteran's Preference does not need to be added for unclassified exams.
Criminal Background Checks: All employment offers are conditioned upon the applicant passing a criminal background check. Convictions are not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered on its individual merits and the type of work sought. However, making false statements or withholding information will cause you to be barred from employment, or removed from employment.
