Supervised by the Program Director, the Prevention Counselor works in schools and communities to facilitate substance abuse prevention services by providing prevention education with evidence-based and non-evidence-based programs, assessment and prevention counseling for youth in school setting.
Position Responsibilities:
· short term problem resolution focused assessment and prevention counseling
· Network with other prevention and social service agencies within the region to include prevention, intervention, treatment, mental health, etc. in order to provide comprehensive services, identify needs, and make referrals as necessary.
· Participate in alcohol, tobacco and drug awareness campaigns.
· Participate in community events for the purpose of providing substance use prevention information and activities.
· Provide parenting sessions for in school and community when requested.
· Document all program actives as required by NYS OASAS
· Provide in-service training to school staff on topics appropriate to expertise, interest, and knowledge.
· Attend training, seminars, workshops, and classes to achieve required credentials and continuing education as required by the agency and NYS OASAS.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and/or Executive Director to meet program and agency objectives.
Qualifications and Credentials / Training:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Health or related field is required and 1 year counseling experience.
· Pre-employment background check is required.
· Evidence-based curriculum training must be obtained within 2 months of employment, and prior to service delivery.
· 15 hour Prevention Training must be completed within 6 months of employment, and annually thereafter.
· Minimum of Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS) credential must be obtained within 24 months of employment.
· Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) must be completed within 18 months of employment.
· Experience working with youth in school or community setting is preferred.
