About Job

The Integrated Behavior Technician / Residential Counselor plays a dual role supporting students ages

5–14 both academically and in their residential living environment. This position bridges educational and

therapeutic support by working collaboratively with teaching staff during school hours and providing

supervision, behavioral support, and mentorship during residential and recreational hours. The

individual helps create a structured, trauma-informed environment where boys can thrive emotionally,

socially, and academically.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic & School-Based Support (Daytime):

  • Assist teachers in implementing instructional activities and behavioral interventions in the

classroom.

  • Work 1:1 or in small groups to reinforce lessons and teach coping and social-emotional skills.
  • Implement BIPs, IEPs, and Section 504 accommodations as directed by clinical and educational

teams.

  • Collect academic and behavioral data, and help monitor progress toward IEP or treatment goals.


  • Assist with transitions between classes and routines, modeling appropriate behavior and self-

regulation strategies.


  • Utilize de-escalation techniques during classroom or hallway incidents, ensuring student and

peer safety.

Residential & Therapeutic Milieu Support (Afternoon/Evening):

  • Supervise students in cottages and shared spaces, ensuring physical and emotional safety at all

times.

  • Model and teach daily living skills, including hygiene, cleaning, cooperation, and structured

leisure.

  • Participate in and lead structured group activities (e.g., games, crafts, discussions) to promote

social skills.

  • Support crisis management and behavioral interventions during non-academic hours as needed.


  • Implement evening routines, provide emotional support at bedtime, and ensure consistent

structure.

  • Document residential incidents, behavioral concerns, and therapeutic progress in shift reports.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students through consistency and empathy.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, behavior management, and emotional regulation

techniques.

  • Strong observational, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across educational, clinical, and residential teams.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to maintain professionalism in high-stress environments.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Required: Direct care staff shall be at least 21 years of age, have a high school diploma, high

school equivalency certificate, or general equivalency diploma, and meet one of the following

pre-service training and education requirements:

  • (1) An associate's or higher degree with a minimum of 12 credits in the field of human services,

or other field related to residential care, awarded by a regionally accredited college or

university;

  • (2) The equivalent of 2 years of full-time experience working with children, either as a paid

employee or volunteer;

  • (3) Any combination of college credits in human services and experience with children that total

2 years, as follows:

  • a. Two years of full-time college shall equal 60 credits;
  • b. Two years of full-time employment shall equal 3000 hours; and
  • c. One credit shall equal 50 hours of experience; or
  • (4) Documentation of 7 years of parenting experience.
  • Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Education, Human Services, or related

field.

  • Prior experience working with children in therapeutic, educational, or residential settings

strongly preferred.

  • Willingness to complete Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training and CPI (Crisis Prevention

Intervention) certification.


Legal and Ethical Duties:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of student records and behavior logs (FERPA & HIPAA compliant).
  • Follow all state regulations and mandated reporter requirements.
  • Comply with all agency behavior intervention and restraint/seclusion protocols.
  • Promote dignity, respect, and safety in all interactions with youth and peers.

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time or shift-based, with evening and weekend hours required for residential coverage.
  • Annual performance evaluations by Principal and/or Cottage Director.
  • Salary based on experience and qualifications.
  • Employment contingent on background checks and child protection clearance.
