Under the direction of the building principal, the School Counselor assists students at all K-6 levels. The counselor will act as an advocate for student’s well-being by utilizing a variety of in-school and out of school resources, thus helping students reach their potential.Benefits:

Listen to students’ concerns about academic, emotional or social problems
Help students process their problems and plan goals and action
Mediate conflict between students, and students and teachers
Improve parent/teacher relationships
Facilitate drug and alcohol prevention, respect & kindness programs etc.
Organize peer counseling programs
Refer students to psychologists and other mental health resources
Act as test coordinator at elementary level
May meet with elementary students with Office Disciplinary Referrals
Follow American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Counseling Core Curriculum – present classroom lessons and lead school-wide structured activities
Complete appraisals, advisements, and placements for individual student plans
Perform responsive services, including individual counseling, small counseling groups, and crisis counseling
Research, develop, and facilitate program planning and school support regarding staff/community relations, community outreach, staff professional development, program management/operations, and committees
Conduct consultations, collaborations, and referrals with staff, parents, and other agencies in regards to indirect student services
Other duties as assigned by building principal; these may include non-guidance duties such as lunch and/or hall supervision, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions: * Must possess elementary School Counselor License per state law

Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
Pass a background check
Familiar with district policies

Desirable Knowledge & Abilities * Previous experience in public school setting

A general knowledge of counselor duties
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
Ability to exercise sound judgement and work independently
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to follow oral and written directions and specific rules, regulations and processes and apply them to a variety of situations.
Knowledge of safe work practices.
