- Listen to students’ concerns about academic, emotional or social problems
- Help students process their problems and plan goals and action
- Mediate conflict between students, and students and teachers
- Improve parent/teacher relationships
- Facilitate drug and alcohol prevention, respect & kindness programs etc.
- Organize peer counseling programs
- Refer students to psychologists and other mental health resources
- Act as test coordinator at elementary level
- May meet with elementary students with Office Disciplinary Referrals
- Follow American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Counseling Core Curriculum – present classroom lessons and lead school-wide structured activities
- Complete appraisals, advisements, and placements for individual student plans
- Perform responsive services, including individual counseling, small counseling groups, and crisis counseling
- Research, develop, and facilitate program planning and school support regarding staff/community relations, community outreach, staff professional development, program management/operations, and committees
- Conduct consultations, collaborations, and referrals with staff, parents, and other agencies in regards to indirect student services
- Other duties as assigned by building principal; these may include non-guidance duties such as lunch and/or hall supervision, etc.
- Physical, mental, and emotional requirements will be developed when needed for purposes of reasonable accommodation.
- Some standing, walking, moving, carrying, bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing and pulling.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Pass a background check
- Familiar with district policies
- A general knowledge of counselor duties
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and work independently
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Ability to follow oral and written directions and specific rules, regulations and processes and apply them to a variety of situations.
