Elementary School Counselor/Behavior Support Specialist will provide social-emotional and behavioral support to students, families, and staff to foster a positive and inclusive school environment. This staff member will coach and support K-5 classroom teachers in implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) practices, trauma-informed strategies, and behavior management techniques. They will collaborate with staff, families, and community partners to promote mental wellness, increase family engagement, and support a schoolwide culture of emotional well-being. In addition to universal support, they will provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 social-emotional and behavioral interventions as determined by the building's MTSS team, including small group counseling, individualized behavior plans, and crisis intervention. They will also contribute to data collection, progress monitoring, and problem-solving efforts to ensure that interventions are effective and aligned with student needs. Through direct student support, consultation with teachers, and collaboration with school staff and families, they will play a critical role in fostering student success and achievement.
Responsibilities
Tier 1:
• Support the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) inclassrooms.
• Assist administrators and the PBIS team with data collection, analysis, and communication to improve behavior supports.
• Promote and support the implementation of social-emotional learning (SEL) and restorative practices schoolwide.
Tier 2:
• Develop and facilitate small group interventions based on data-driven student needs.
• Conduct restorative circles with students and staff to address conflicts and build relationships.
• Provide individual mental health and behavioral support sessions for students requiring frequent intervention.
• Help design, implement, and monitor Tier 2 social-emotional and behavioral interventions.
• Coach teachers in behavior management strategies, trauma-informed practices, and student de-escalation techniques.
• Respond to and de-escalate Tier 2 behavioral incidents, supporting staff in managing student behavior effectively.
Tier 3:
• Facilitate Tier 3 behavioral health interventions, including individualized behavior plans and crisis response.
• Participate in Tier 3 team meetings to discuss and develop support plans for students with intensive needs.
• Collaborate with special education and general education staff to ensure cohesive support for students receiving intensive interventions.
GRANT FUNDED POSITION
Qualifications:
Master's degree or higher in psychology, counseling, social work, or school psychology
(licensed or limited licensed).

School Description:
Black River Public School is an independent, non-profit college-preparatory charter school serving grades K-12. Chartered in 1996 by Grand Valley State University, the school features a multi-age Montessori-based elementary program, an integrated middle school liberal arts curriculum, and a rigorous high school program capped by 18 Advanced Placement courses. The school has grown from 200 to 960 students and limits enrollment at each grade level to 80 students. Because of its unique curriculum, Black River is permitted to begin the school year 2 weeks before Labor Day.
