Position Summary: Staff members will instruct children in their charge in accordance with the curriculum and course of study adopted by the Board of Education.
Qualifications: Master's Degree in Social Work
Essential Duties: The Social Worker has the duties and responsibilities commonly associated with this position, including (but not limited to) the following, which are performed directly or through the proper delegation of authority, within the framework of the general laws of New Jersey, the regulations of the NJ State Department of Education, the policies and rules of the Nutley School District, and the terms of the contract with the Nutley Education Association, with all of which he/she is expected to be familiar. As well, the position is responsible for duties commonly associated with communication positions, which are performed directly or through the proper delegation of authority.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the Child Study Team.
- Receive referrals of children who are exhibiting symptoms of social, emotional, or physical difficulties which are interfering with their learning, their attendance, or their social adjustment.
- Referral to the social worker may be made by teachers, counselors, principals, psychologist, or parents through the Supervisor/Director of Special Services.
- Prior to initiating action, the social worker shall meet with the building principal, teacher, psychologist, etc., for the purpose of gathering information on the child.
- Study and analyze a child's family background and history, looking for causes and possible solutions to a school problem.
- Counsel students in regard to social, personal, or emotional problems which interfere with educational achievement.
- Counsel parents to: help the pupil in educational achievement; increase parent understanding and constructive participation in planning for the pupil; and assist the parents in the use of appropriate community resources.
- Serve as consultant and resource person to principals, teachers, and other school personnel to achieve better diagnosis and planning for the child.
- Act in the capacity of liaison person between the school and social agencies, clinics, physicians, guidance clinics, juvenile court, camps, welfare agencies, etc. This includes written and oral reports, joint conferences, cooperative planning and referral to the appropriate agency.
- Initiate a follow-up home visit or case conference with all parents of exceptional children. This shall be performed at least once a year.
- Establish and maintain cooperative action with the Director of Special Services in referral of pupils, cooperation with parents, contact with community social agencies, coordination of school social work services with the work of these agencies.
- Participate in councils of social agencies and professional meetings in determining needs for and developing additional casework resources.
- Interpret the role of the school social worker to the P.T.O.'s and other community organizations.
- Maintain case records.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Assembles available data necessary to complete a social history. The study shall include observation of and communication with the pupil and an evaluation of family, school and community factors which contribute to the pupil's adjustment within the educational setting.
- To counsel students on an individual and/or group basis in regard to social, personal or emotional problems which interfere with educational achievement.
- To counsel parents to help the pupil's educational achievement, increase parent understanding and constructive participation in planning for the pupil and assist the parents in the use of appropriate community resources.
- Act in the capacity of liaison person between the school, home and necessary agencies.
- To provide follow-up services which include school visitations, review of educational programs and meetings with necessary parties.
Evaluation of Performance: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the New Jersey Administrative Code and Board of Education Policy.
Additional Responsibilities: Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the principal or superintendent may assign or delegate.
Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on supervision and evaluation.
Computer Skills: Proficient in computer applications pertinent to support the position.
