  • Two (2) years of related work experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Licensed mental health certification, licensed social worker, licensed family therapist, personal counseling, substance abuse counseling, crisis counseling, and/or student retention

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides intake and accommodations for general population and veteran students with disabilities ensuring access to services on all campuses; explains documentation requirements and other departmental policies and procedures to students. Serves as a primary contact for student veterans for crisis intervention and emergency distress issues.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of DSC academic programs to provide academic advising for general population students and student veterans with disabilities. Advising includes major decision, course selection, schedule development and accommodations to maximize student success. Assists general population students and disabled veteran students with appeals and course substitution processes. Monitors progress to degree through regular audits; and works with faculty and staff to share information and strengthen support for veteran students with disabilities.
  • Provides testing accommodations for general population and veteran students with disabilities according to departmental policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling, acquiring, scoring, and interpreting tests; and hiring student assistants and providing adaptive equipment.
  • Supports and/or coordinates recruiting, hiring, and training of note takers, readers, tutors, and other student employees as needed.
  • Gathers, verifies, and maintains information to support periodic and special reports documenting activities and events for assigned area. Maintains record system for area of responsibility. Reviews and processes daily paperwork.
  • Assists the Veterans Services Office with the processing, counseling, and management, of Veteran students.
  • Participates in pre-college enrollment meetings of general population and veteran students transitioning; reviews student educational records/transcripts; discusses and makes recommendations on program of study; and communicates College policies/procedures and admissions requirements.
  • Assists with computer lab instruction; trains/instructs disabled veteran students and staff in use of computer software and adaptive equipment.
  • Counsels students on general disciplinary issues and/or handles disciplinary cases and follows up with sanctions as appropriate.
  • Supports, coordinates and participates in departmental and College's initiatives and events as appropriate. Provides supports to other student service departments, especially during peak enrollment periods.
  • Attends staff meetings to exchange information. Attends professional seminars and/or conferences to improve professional skills.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Excellent technical skills
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Have demonstrated knowledge of adaptive equipment and alternative software for student accessibility
  • Ability to develop and meets goals is required
  • Knowledge of computers, peripherals, and software programs such as Word, Dragon Speak, JAWS, Magic, PowerPoint, Excel and PeopleSoft
  • Must be energetic, able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and be flexible in order to match the demands of the students and department
  • Must be able to take direction, work effectively and professionally
  • Must be able to work with a wide range of populations
  • Must be able to work in a dynamic and challenging environment
  • Previous technical knowledge of adaptive equipment and alternative software experience is a plus
