POSITION DESCRIPTION


POSITION TITLE
: Professional School Counselor


POSITION SUMMARY:
The counselor will help the principal and other school staff in creating a school environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Included are establishing rapport and assisting students become self-reliant, involved in their own educational and life planning, problem-solving, decision-making and self-managing behavior.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in implementing the district’s philosophy of education, its policies and rules governing instruction, student activities and conduct.
  • Assist in the implementation of Federal, State and District mandates, policies, rules and regulations.
  • Assist in providing orientation services for students and staff new to the building.
  • Maintain records relevant to monitoring of students and the guidance program.
  • Assist students in understanding their strengths and challenges as they strive to achieve their best.
  • Assist in the administration, analysis and communicating results of the State and District assessment programs.
  • Provide information to individual, large and small groups of students to use in planning and making optimum personal, education and life choices.
  • Facilitate students becoming aware of personal strengths and limitations as related to their life goals, personal potential and self-satisfaction.
  • Assist in development and implementation of any student academic and character recognition programs.
  • Be available to individual students for assistance with personal issues.
  • Confer as appropriate with students, families and staff in the best interest of a student’s individual health, safety, education and character development.
  • Be familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of the intervention and accommodation process from pre-referral study through application of individualized plans.
  • Be aware of and utilize available school, community and other resources.
  • Be prepared for and actively participate on any District Crisis Intervention Team as needed.
  • Maintain professional competence and growth through participation in district provided and self-selected staff development opportunities.
  • Perform such other tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned by the building principal or Superintendent of Schools.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid and current Special Services License issued by the Colorado Department of Education
  • Endorsement in school counseling
