About Job

The Health Service Counselor is responsible for counseling expectant mothers on topics of prenatal/postpartum care, and infant basics. This position works within the scope of Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) to provide comprehensive counseling and care to expectant mothers and assist them to be better prepared for the prenatal and postpartum experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides counseling services and documentation per CPSP protocols to expectant mothers on issues related to expectancy, pregnancy, prenatal lifestyle and postpartum
  • Assesses client needs, provides support and information about community resources
  • Assists clients in coping with discomforts and avoiding harmful practices
  • Educate clients about labor and delivery, hospitalization, pain control and relaxation techniques
  • Assists clients in revising traditional practices, and adopting to healthy family goals and preventative principles
  • Prepares and distributes materials regarding NEMS’ services as part of the counseling experiences
  • Conducts, educates and advises the homeless population on health screenings, vaccinations, personal hygiene, proper nutrition and healthier lifestyle options
  • Active member of CPSP
  • Collects data as needed for related reports
  • Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor

Qualifications

  • Completion of a four year degree in health education, healthcare or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Valid California RN license
  • Minimum of two years experience in clinical counseling for women, family and children
  • Knowledgeable in hospital procedures, health care systems and clinical practices
  • Knowledge in physiology, clinical science, behavioral health, neuroscience, pain control, and relaxation techniques
  • Must be proficient in computers

Physical

  • Rare occasions lifting/pushing/pulling objects over 10lbs
  • Occasional ten key typing
  • Constant sitting

Language

  • Must be bilingual and bi-literate in English and Chinese ( Cantonese or Mandarin)

Status

This is a FLSA Non-exempt position.

This is a OSHA high-risk position.
