POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide a variety of support and advocacy services designed to promote high school success and prepare students for
post high school experiences.
This job description covers a department of at least three people who divide the responsibilities according to expertise
and preference; that is; some of the essential duties may be carried out by one or two people rather than all three.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Identify curriculum needs and work cooperatively with the High School staff to create the Program of Studies (course descriptions).
  • Inform students and parents, in meetings and with written communication, of graduation requirements, availability of courses, vocational and post-secondary opportunities.
  • Develop and revise the master schedule, in cooperation with the High School Administrators.
  • Individually schedule all students annually, and computerize the information according to the district's information management requirements.
  • Organize, supervise and help administer group tests; for example, State Proficiency exams, ASVAB and PSAT. Inform parents of test results and interpret test results for students.
  • Gather information on individual students as requested by parents, physicians or other interested parties; for example, grades, behavior, substance abuse, A.D.D.
  • Make referrals to and communicate with in-school specialists, human service agencies, private practitioners, law enforcement, hospitals, attorneys and others as appropriate.
  • Track students who have IEP's, 504 plans or Educational Options plans.
  • Communicate with the teaching staff about individual student needs, and provide the staff with information and materials; for example, class lists, mailing labels and scan sheets.
  • Assure the completeness and accuracy of all student records, including confidential records, paying particular attention to course work and credits needed for graduation.
  • Provide students with career counseling, including assessment and guidance in using computerized career searches.
  • Arrange visitations to the high school by college representatives, military recruiters and job recruiters.
  • Oversee shadowing experiences, individual college visitations and regional college fair visits.
  • Publish information that informs students, staff and parents about such topics as financial aid, post secondary plans, scheduling, testing, summer school and vocational school.
  • Assist with the resolution of crises as needed.
  • Counsel individual students upon request, provide other individual student services; for example, records verification, letters of recommendation and communication regarding grades.
  • Conduct small-group counseling sessions, or delegate them to qualified individuals or committees, such as the Impact Team.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned. Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.
  • Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  • Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in committee work and co-curricular activities in a professionally responsible manner.
  • Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the High School Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designee(s).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) or more years of successful teaching experience.
  • Ohio certificate/license in School Counselin
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Well-developed interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Consultative and counseling skills.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities but be flexible about changes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Computer skills and a willingness to update those skills regularly.
  • General knowledge of the high school academic program and various teaching methods.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  • Various office machines and instructional equipment, such as calculators, copiers, laminating machines, VCR's, DVD players, slide projectors.
  • Computer/printer.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions, that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days, except calamity days.
  • Some interaction with unruly children and distraught or angry adults.
  • Some travel to workshops, colleges, other schools.
  • Some evening, week-end and summer work.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, see, hear, read.
  • Occasional requirement to lift, push, pull and carry various supplies and/or equipment, up to a maximum of 25 pounds.

  • Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
