Length of Contract: 200 days per school year.
JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Appropriate South Carolina certification.
  • Demonstration of successful experience as a guidance counselor
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of successful work with teachers, students, and parents
  • Proficiency with technology

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services
JOB GOAL: To help students cope and overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with at-risk students in after-school clubs.
Acts as a liaison contact between mental health contracted services and the district.
Develops a curriculum and provides sessions for students on how to improve social skills and in dealing with substance abuse issues.
Works to resolve students' educational handicaps.
Works to discover and develop the special abilities of students.
Guides students in their participation in school and community activities such as Red Ribbon month.
Provides support for students whose parents are engaged in active military operations.
Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such issues as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
Confers with parents and provides training for the improvement of handling inappropriate behavior
Advises administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline.
Provides professional development training to teachers for the purpose of assisting them in reducing the number of discipline referrals and implementing effective classroom management strategies.
Intervenes when students are establishing a pattern of truancy (i.e., makes contact with parents, develops improvement plan, and makes referrals to the truancy officer).
Coordinates district-wide efforts to implement the "Olweus" Bullying Prevention Program.
Assist in implementing a summer "bridge" program for students transitioning to high school.
Accepts other duties as assigned within the role of the guidance position.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Two hundred (200) days per school year Salary is to be determined based on the teacher salary schedule.
EVALUATION:
The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.
