The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is expanding our psychiatry team! We're dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals with mental health and IDD needs.  We're actively seeking a Forensic Psychiatrist Evaluator and Training Supervisor (Part-Time) who wants to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families struggling with mental illness. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical skills and a passion for helping underserved individuals, promoting recovery and patient-centeredness. Under the general direction of the Medical Director of Adult Forensic Services, this position functions as the onsite medical education and training supervisor for the Forensic Competency and Sanity Psychiatric Fellows. This position provides on-site clinical supervision, case consultation and administrative responsibilities for the participants in the Forensic Fellowship Program. Collaboration with the Harris Center’s Medical Director of Training and Education along with the leadership over the Medical Education Components from the Medical Schools is required. This role also has a direct patient care component that includes conducting court-ordered competency and sanity evaluations, writing reports and when necessary, provide court testimony

 Your Role in Action:

Administrative (20%)

1.    Collaborate with THC Medical Director of Training and Evaluation to ensure that the partnering academic institutions policies and practices concerning graduate medical education and the affiliates’ ACGME’s institution requirements are met.

2.    Collaborate and communicate with the Medical Schools area Residency/Fellows Training Directors at each of the partnering academic sites.

3.    Administration of evaluations and provide feedback in partnership with the faculty training directors of individuals/fellows to ensure optimal performance of duties. including completion of all applicable assessments which are required.

4.    Development of strong supervisory and stakeholder relations with the providers and their medical school leaderships.

Clinical (80%)

1.    Provides on-site case consultation, and/or clinical supervision and training to fellows to facilitate optimal performance of job duties.

2.    Serves as consultant, physician educator for residents and fellows regarding procedures, resources and clinical issues ensuring that all learners receive the required training that commensurate with the best practices in the specialty of forensic psychiatry and in accordance with ACGME requirements for psychiatry residency and forensic psychiatry fellowship.

3.    Track the progress of the learners (residents and Fellows) and provide additional educational and supervisory support when needed.

4.    Conducts competency and sanity evaluations as well as other court ordered evaluations, completion of written reports within required timeframe and provides court testimony relating to evaluation results as requested, when not providing supervision or case consultation to the forensic psychiatry fellows. 

5.    Effectively interacts with judges, attorneys, and other court staff in the collection of information and collaboration on assigned cases.

6.    Demonstrates ethical conduct in all clinical and professional activities.

7.    Ensures all services that are provided meet and /or comply with agency, unit and/or regulatory policies and Procedures, state and federal laws as well as the performance contract.

8.    Communicates and works with consumers/visitors/other staff in a manner that demonstrates culturally sensitive and competent perspective in all interactions

·         Contributes to suicide care and prevention by embracing our values and applying a trauma-informed approach rooted in safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.

 

What qualifications you will need:

Education:

·         Graduation from as Accredited Medical School and Psychiatric Residency Program. Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Texas. Special Courses, Certificates, and Licenses: Texas Medical License.

·         Must have an up-to-date Board Certification of Specialty.

Other Key Qualifications

·         Licensed to Practice Medicine in the State of Texas (Specialty in Psychiatry).

·         Boards Certified in Forensic.

·         Must have and maintain a current controlled Substance Registration certificate from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

·         Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Registered.

·         Preferred Experience in Medical Education and Supervising Psychiatry Residents in the public sector.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

·         Knowledge of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Title 1. Chapter 46B. requirements for Competency and Sanity evaluations.

·         Knowledge of best practices in supervision of students on forensic evaluations.

·         Strong diagnostic skills, the ability to incorporate patient history, symptoms, and

environmental and related issues to formulate proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

·         Strong communication skills, listening and interpersonal skills above average.

·         Written documentation is clear, concise and well-constructed.

·         Effective time management and organization skills.

·         Able to execute standard word processing software on the computer.
