About Job

Venture Academy is seeking a full-time Career and College Counselor for the high school for the 25-26 school year.

About the Position:

Venture Academy is a small 6th-12th grade charter school in Southeast Minneapolis. At Venture Academy, we provide a future-focused education to enrich our students. Our student-centered approach meets students where they are at. We are driven by our mission: students overcome whatever barriers they may face to become successful and happy adults in their chosen path.

Qualifications desired (but not limited to):

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated success working with students (preferably low-income and students of color)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers
  • Willingness to receive coaching and instructional feedback
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Experience working with Multi-Language Learners
  • Knowledge of the IEP process and requirements
  • Flexibility and willingness to contribute when necessary on projects outside of own department
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • exceptional time management skills and demonstrated ability to multitask
  • Strong working knowledge in all Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Google Suite
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish): Not required, but preferred.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

  • Advise and assist the junior class to create college lists and prepare for the college application process
  • Teach seminar class Q1 of the school year: create a curriculum that encompasses Career and College planning. This class needs to be accessible to all Venture Academy Seniors.
  • Advise and assist the senior class to apply for career and college opportunities, supporting the application and acceptance process.
  • Collaborate weekly with student Advisors and Case Managers to support students
  • Manage PSEO application process with support of the Academic Dean
  • Support summer program application process for the sophomore and junior class with support of the Academic Dean.
  • Support Students registering for the ACT at locally approved sites
  • In collaboration with Career and College Counselor, CTE Teacher, and Director of Future Focused Learning, expose students 9 - 12 to a variety of Career and Technical Education opportunities through tours, visits, and speakers
  • Work with the Director of Future Focused Learning and the CTE teacher to plan the H.S 101 curriculum and support the class as needed.

  • Build and maintain our summer program opportunities database (both national and local opportunities)
  • Identify local summer program opportunities/partners

  • Collaborate with Middle School teaching and advisory staff to plan appropriate career and college exposure activities
  • Yearly grade level event/assembly participation to make a connection with 6-12th grade

  • Work closely with advisors, teachers, case managers and support staff
  • Attend weekly PD and meetings
  • Participate in a selection of after-school events throughout the school year
  • Attend IEP Meetings
