Job Description

Under general supervision, with very broad latitude for independent judgment and decision making, performs highly difficult and responsible professional and supervisory work in the mental health discipline. In addition to performing the duties of Assignment Levels I and II at a higher level, also performs the following:

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with mental health leadership, coordinates and implements counseling programs for an assigned area of a health care setting. Monitors and guides mental health counselors assigned at Levels I and II in the establishment and provision of these programs.
  • Provides supervision for mental health counselors assigned at Level I, practicing under a limited permit.
  • Assigns appropriate supervisory responsibilities to mental health counselors assigned at Level II.
  • Assesses individual performance competencies for mental health counselors assigned to Levels I and II, and arranges staff development opportunities based on assessment outcomes.
  • . Facilitates the participation of consumers of mental health services within assigned area.
  • Acts as a liaison between the health care setting and community agencies or programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Assignment Level I

  • Valid license and current registration or valid limited permit to practice as a Mental Health Counselor issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

Assignment Level II

  • Valid license and current registration to practice as a Mental Health Counselor issued by the NYSED and two (2) years of full-time, paid, professional experience providing direct client care in a behavioral health setting.

Assignment Level III

  • Valid license and current registration to practice as a Mental Health Counselor issued by the NYSED; and three (3) additional years of post-licensure experience.
