Primary Purpose:
The Academic Counselor drives the mission of the Road to College & Career (RTCC) program by cultivating a strong college-going culture and preparing all students for post-secondary success. Through strategic planning, data-informed interventions, and collaboration with students, staff, and families, the counselor delivers a comprehensive program that supports academic, career, and social development.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Academic Recordkeeping and Reporting
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, TEA, and Uplift policies related to counseling, advising, and academic records.
• Provide accurate documentation for PEIMS reporting requirements.
• Collaborate with registrars and teachers to ensure accuracy and fairness in academic records, addressing grading or reporting discrepancies promptly.
Academic and College Readiness Advising
• Guide 6-12th grade students in developing individualized academic and career plans through one-on-one and group advising.
• Advise students on course selection and engagement in extracurricular, volunteer, and enrichment opportunities to enhance college readiness.
• Implement targeted counseling programs to support academic growth, enrichment, and intervention.
• Use academic and college-readiness data to identify trends, measure student growth, and inform campus-level strategies.
• Support parent engagement through workshops and enrollment-related activities.
Progress to Graduation
- Lead initiatives for dual credit, enrichment, and credit recovery programs.
- Coordinate with registrars and campus leadership to ensure student schedules meet graduation requirements.
- Oversee the development, maintenance, and regular updates of 4-year graduation plans.
- Collaborate with teachers and leaders to create and implement intervention plans for at-risk students, providing targeted support as needed.
Additional Responsibilities
• Foster a positive school culture and uphold the goals of the RTCC program.
• Adhere to all campus and district policies and procedures.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Experience, and/or Certification(s)
- Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree (B.A./ B.S.) from accredited four-year university required; Master's degree in education, counseling, or a related field preferred.
- Experience Requirements: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a school or higher education setting, preferably in college advising or secondary counseling. Candidates may be asked to complete a pre-interview task to demonstrate relevant experience and readiness for the role. Previous teaching experience preferred.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Effective Communication: Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with students, parents, staff, and community partners. Capable of presenting complex information clearly to diverse audiences including families, educators, and campus leadership.
- Advising and Counseling Expertise: Ability to guide students through academic planning, graduation tracking, and post-secondary preparation. Skilled in providing individualized and group counseling aligned with student needs and goals.
- Data Analysis and Problem Solving: Proficient in analyzing academic and college-readiness data to identify trends, measure progress, and inform interventions. Able to develop actionable plans based on data insights.
- Attention to Detail and Compliance: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and verify academic records and reporting requirements in accordance with federal, state, and district policies.
- Technology Proficiency: Competence in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and the ability to quickly learn and utilize education-focused software systems and platforms.
- Bilingual Skills: Spanish/English bilingual strongly preferred, as this position requires frequent communication with Spanish-speaking families.

Starting Salary: $59,000
