You will:
The College Counselor supports students in developing their identity as future college students. The Counselor will work directly with E.L. Haynes High School students to build and strengthen their college-going identity as well as supporting them in finding meaningful out-of-school experiences that assist in discovering their interests and passion(s) and exploring how those are connected to future educational and career goals. The position reports to the Director of College Counseling and works closely with other members of the College Office team as well as advisors through the high school advisory system.

The College Counselor supports students in developing their identity as future college students. The Counselor will work directly with E.L. Haynes High School students to build and strengthen their college-going identity as well as supporting them in finding meaningful out-of-school experiences that assist in discovering their interests and passion(s) and exploring how those are connected to future educational and career goals. The position reports to the Director of College Counseling and works closely with other members of the College Office team as well as advisors through the high school advisory system.
- Build meaningful and authentic relationships with students and families to help them identify future goals and design pathways to achieve them. Identify, develop, and sustain partnerships that provide students with a wide range of enriching out-of-school experiences aligned with high school curricular goals.
- Lead the design and implementation of college and career programming for lower high school grade levels (9th and/or 10th grade), ensuring early exposure to postsecondary pathways.
- Manage the external opportunities portfolio of the College Office, connecting students to pre-college programs, summer enrichment opportunities, the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), and other external partnerships.
- Advise a caseload of seniors, supporting them through the entire college application process, including financial aid applications, state grant submissions, and scholarship opportunities.
- Collaborate with the College Office Team to design and deliver workshops for students and families that demystify the college application and postsecondary planning process.
- Co-create and implement an advisory curriculum that helps students navigate the college process and build essential life skills for independent engagement in college and career planning.
- Ensure out-of-school experiences align with college access and readiness metrics by tracking, analyzing, and presenting participation data to the College Office and key school stakeholders.
- Support and strengthen the college-going culture at E.L. Haynes High School by coordinating surveys and other feedback tools to understand student and family aspirations and perceptions.
- Actively contribute to the school community by attending events beyond regular school hours and fulfilling additional duties as assigned.
You have:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience working with high school students from racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds;
- A background in school counseling, social work, and/or college access;
- A desire to build on an existing program;
- An appreciation for the developmental needs of high school students;
- A commitment to supporting students in pursuing a college education; and
- Experience designing and implementing lessons and informational workshops for students and/or families.
- Oral and written proficiency in Spanish and English;
- Experience coordinating out-of-school programming for secondary school students, including building formal partnerships with youth-serving organizations;
- Experience teaching at the secondary level;
- Served as a classroom/homeroom advisor or counselor for a group of secondary students; or
- Developed and executed systems and plans for regular communication with parents of secondary students.
