Job Details:

The Social Work Screener’s primary role is to provide psychiatric emergency screening in GSH Emergency Department requesting or requiring psychiatric evaluation. The Screener is also responsible for obtaining insurance approval for inpatient behavioral health treatment, making sure that correct legal papers are completed and prepare other documentation, as necessary. Maintaining administrative records related to emergency evaluations. Close collaboration with ED physician and other staff members, psychiatrist on-call, and Behavioral Health Dept. Frequent contacts with law enforcement personnel, EMS, security, ED RN staff, and family members.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Emergency Department

  • Provide psychiatric emergency room screening and disposition of patients and refers those ineligible for admission to other community resources.
  • Exhibits high standards of guest, staff and community relations and maintains professional behavior in the performance of these duties.
  • obtaining insurance approval for inpatient behavioral health treatment.
  • making sure that correct legal papers are completed and prepare other documentation, as necessary.
  • Document all interaction timely and accurately on the proper form.
  • Function as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Identify problems and plan interventions in response to these problems.
  • Adheres to Chemical Dependency’s policies and procedures in admitting new patients.
  • Remain knowledgeable and current about community resources and other concrete services.
  • Arrange for post discharge care of patients by referring patients to appropriate community agencies to meet aftercare needs.
  • Collect data and prepares monthly statistical reports on all patients and presents to the Clinical Director.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly work area and adheres to hospital policies and procedures and standard safe work practices.
  • Maintains ER log of encounters in the ER and on medical floor.
  • Maintains and fosters positive working relationships with appropriate community service providers.

Medical Units

  • Assist psychiatrist in addressing psychiatrist consult/detox in medical floors that include initial screening and follow-up and coordinate with case management.
  • Attend Code gray /Behavioral emergency calls on medical floors


QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

Experience: Social work experience in a psychiatric setting.

Education: Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work or mental health required.

Licenses / Certifications: Possession of a valid license and current registration, issued by the New York State Education Department, as a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor or a limited permit in Social Work or Mental Health Counselor required.
