School Counselor Job Description:
The individual will provide Individualized Education Program (IEP) mandated counseling to students enrolled in BOCES programs. The individual will implement students’ IEPs, provide crisis counseling and work with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure student success. The individual must have the ability to collaboratively work with colleagues, maintain accurate records, and have a strong knowledge of outside resources available to support students. The individual must have knowledge of behavior modification techniques and have strong interpersonal skills. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS), de-escalation training, and an understanding of trauma and how it manifests in children and adolescents, are desirable. An understanding of the differences in developmental needs and externalizations for students is preferred. The individual must be able to perform student behavioral crisis management, respond quickly to calls for crisis management services, respond quickly to students’ escalating behaviors, assist in de-escalating students’ behaviors, perform physical interventions, prevent and stop students from eloping, escort students inside and outside the building, model appropriate deescalation strategies for staff, lift students off the ground, and regularly and repetitively stand, sit, walk, crouch, and bend. Appropriate certification, or ability to attain it, is required. Regular attendance and dependability are required. Other responsibilities may be assigned.
