Oncology Social Worker, Bronson Cancer Center - Kalamazoo: FT, 80 hrs./pp, Day Shift - The Oncology Social Worker reports to Cancer Care Leadership.
This position provides psychosocial assessment and evaluations for patient and their family members, individual group and family counseling, coordination of available services, referrals to community resources, financial assistance, referral to Bronson Battle Creek Oncology funds, discharge planning and organizes and facilitates support groups, educates and counsels patients/families on available community resources and facilities. Collaborates with other members of the patient care team including external agencies to assess each situation to determine the best course of action to break down barriers of care.
Master’s Degree in Social Work and Licensed Master’s Social work (LMSW) or Limited license Master’s Social work (LLMSW) Or Master’s Degree in Psychology or Counseling Psychology and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Limited License Professional Counselor (LLPC) or License Psychologist (LP) or Limited License Psychologist (LLP) will be considered. Employee needs to be fully licensed within two years of hire including state required supervision hours and licensing exam, required. 1-2 years professional level of work experience in healthcare preferred but not required.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in a clean, well-lighted & temperature-controlled environment. The Oncology Social Worker must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as, moderate noise, infectious/communicable diseases, radiation, chemicals or chemical fumes, odors, gases and dusts.

Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time. The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
- Referrals are received from patients, families, staff and physicians.
- Provides initial psychosocial assessments for all patient and/or family involvement in a timely manner according to department policies and procedures. Assesses patients for pain on a 1-10 scale and reports back to physician and nursing staff, according to hospital policy and procedures.
- Utilizes interventions which are responsive to patient/family concerns, demonstrating clinical knowledge of age specific bio-psychosocial factors. Incorporates into treatment plan.
- Develops effective working relationships with patient and/or family and healthcare team members.
- Interacts and communicates effectively with community agencies in assessment of and service to patients. Provides liaison and referral services to community agencies.
- Maintains confidentiality and complies with professional ethics according to professional, department, and hospital standards.
- Communicates effectively with the Department Director on a routine basis and informs her/him of sensitive issues.
- Comply with policies and procedures in completing department records, including computer documentation and other statistical records.
- Responds to new referrals in a timely manner and documents according to policy.
- Complies with required standards for medical/legal situations (i.e., child abuse, dependent alcohol abuse, and home health referrals).
- Links patients to “Patient Assistance Programs” through pharmaceutical companies and related access to care foundations per ability to meet qualifications.
- Oversees and coordinates with the department Director, pharmacy, nursing, oncology staff, financial services and marketing the administration of the Medication Oncology Fund and other restricted funds.
- Demonstrates commitment to providing outstanding customer service in a manner that is reflective of our mission, values and customer service standards.
- Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
- Facilitates group support sessions and stress management classes for both inpatient and outpatient clients.
