Position Summary:
The K-8 School Social Worker/Counselor supports the emotional, social, and academic development of students by providing individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and coordination of services between home, school, and community resources. This role collaborates closely with teachers, administrators, and families to promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. The counselor/social worker helps address barriers to learning, advocates for student well-being, and contributes to the development of school-wide programs that foster positive behavior, mental health, and social-emotional growth. This position works teacher contract days with the possibility of additional days in the summer if desired.

  • Model calm and patience while holding students to high academic and behavioral expectations.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead social skills groups for students to enhance social emotional learning
  • Maintain documentation of groups as well as notable family and student interactions; prepare appropriate reports and progress notes
  • Connect NECP students and families to community mental health resources, including but not limited to: county case management services, treatment programs, outpatient therapy, etc.
  • Serve as the McKinney-Vento, Fostering Connections, and ESSA liaison; lead support efforts for students and families experiencing homelessness or highly mobile situations
  • Serve as the point person for school-based mental health professionals serving students at NECP, providing both orientation and scheduling support
  • Respond to students in crisis and work with the behavior team for ongoing support
  • Attend IEP and CST meetings when appropriate
  • Provide counseling services for students as necessary
  • Support implementation of the school-wide approach to classroom management and discipline
  • Complete self-harm, suicide, and threat risk assessments when necessary
  • Train staff in developmentally appropriate coping, de-escalation, and regulation strategies
  • Lead professional development in areas such as mandated reporting of abuse or neglect
  • Serve as the primary contact for the Every Meal program
  • Provide attendance interventions as necessary and complete required truancy reporting
Required Qualifications:
  • Licensed MN social worker or school counselor or ability to be licensed by time of hire
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations
  • Ability to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with an urban and/or ESL population
  • Masters Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field and working toward professional licensure
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse student populations
  • Fluency (ideally) or proficiency in Spanish, Somali, Arabic, or Oromo

About 50% qualify for English Language Learning services and about 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch and around 12% qualify for Special Education.
Compensation:
A competitive salary and full benefits will be offered. Salary range for the position is $60,000-75,000.
