School Counselor Pay & Perks:

  • Intentionally small school settings - Midtown high school has less than 400 students in total, and caseload is shared with a full-time school Counselor
  • Multiple student supports available – Midtown high school is staffed with a Dean of Students (who supports student behaviors and attendance/truancy work)

School Counselor Qualifications:

  • REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree
  • REQUIRED: valid Tennessee teaching license (endorsement #487)

School Counselor Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement the school’s SEL program, focused on improving students’ academic, social and emotional skills
  • Lead students individually and in groups to develop and strengthen their social emotional skills
  • Provide emotional and cognitive regulation skills and techniques for students, as needed, to help students successfully navigate challenging circumstances.
  • Refer students and families to various school, district and community service providers as needed
  • Educate on the CASEL SEL Competencies and trauma-informed practices which support the equity and dignity of our students
  • Support and contribute to a school-wide focus on three pillars: academic excellence, values-based character education, and service learning in the community.
  • Establish a supportive, joyful, and hopeful culture that has high expectations for students’ individual and collective success.
  • Provide mediation for students, as needed, to help students successfully navigate challenging circumstances.
  • Administer assessments to determine students’ academic, social, and emotional strengths and areas of need.
  • Analyze various data to help inform students’ counseling needs.
  • Refer students and families to various school, district, and community service providers as needed.
  • Carefully monitor students’ educational plans and progress in collaboration with staff and service providers.
  • Communicate regularly with families as partners in the education of their children.
  • Carefully manage students’ confidential files.
