Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a comprehensive training program designed to prepare you for certification as a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist.
  • Learn and apply principles of peer support, recovery-oriented practices, and effective communication techniques.
  • Engage in practical training exercises and simulations to develop skills in providing support to individuals experiencing Substance Use Disorder or mental health challenges.
  • Complete required coursework and assessments to meet Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist certification requirements.
  • Collaborate with trainers, supervisors, and fellow trainees to enhance learning and professional growth.
  • Maintain accurate records of training activities, progress, and achievements.

Requirements:

To seek Certification as Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist an individual must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent degree. (some college coursework preferred).
  • Be self-identified as having experience with the process of recovery from a mental illness or substance use disorder, either as a consumer of these services or as the parent, caregiver or family member of a consumer.
  • Be willing to share their experience.
  • Have a strong dedication to recovery.
  • Agree, in writing, to adhere to the Code of Ethics.
  • Successfully complete the 80-hour training requirements for a peer support specialist through a CalMHSA-approved training entity.
  • Pass the certification examination.

Other Requirements:

  • Must posses the knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently.
  • Passion for substance use disorder & mental health advocacy and a strong desire to support others in their recovery journey.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in all interactions.
  • Willingness to participate in a structured training program and meet certification requirements.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of Substance use disorders and mental health.
